  **We are not taking any new students into the Healthcare Management Technology Program or the Medical Coding Specialist Certificate program at this time.**

The Healthcare Management Technology program prepares students for a variety of positions in the healthcare environment. Graduates of the program generally work in positions such as office managers, departmental supervisors/managers, admissions coordinators, front office/clerical positions, medical billers/coders, and medical records clerks, and may work in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, long term care facilities, insurance companies, or managed care organizations. All of the courses are offered online, which provides an excellent opportunity for individuals currently working in the healthcare environment to upgrade their skills and knowledge.

Additional Entrance Requirements: Students will be required to complete the Healthcare Science certificate program and the Pre-Healthcare Management concentration, with an overall GPA of 2.0, prior to entering the Healthcare Management Technology degree program.

    Nature of the Work [+]

    A career in Health Care Management Technology is ideal for the individual who wishes to apply their business savvy to the health care industry. Health Care Managers and Administrators are essentially experts in the fields of business management and health care administrations; they must be very well organized and able to juggle many different projects at one time. A health care management professional is typically responsible for millions of dollars worth of equipment and must be able to understand and analyze numerical data. Communication, tact, and leadership skills are also vital as they must interact with and motivate hundreds of employees Lastly, the health care administrator must possess superior decision-making skills. Due to the executive-level of the position, health care managers may work long hours to complete special projects or during times of emergency.




    Work Environment [+]

    Graduates of this program may be employed at entry level positions as patient account representatives, admission or registration specialists, insurance technicians, or insurance claims processors. Those graduates who already have healthcare experience may be employed as office managers, managed care coordinators, or departmental supervisors or managers in patient financial services, depending upon their previous experiences in the healthcare environment. Graduates may find employment in a variety of healthcare settings including physician offices, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance companies or managed care organizations.




    Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement [+]

    According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, a bachelor’s or master's degree is the preferred credential. However, an associate degree is adequate for some entry-level positions. Typical coursework for health care management includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical classification and coding systems, healthcare reimbursement methods, management courses, human resource management, and medical law and ethics. Applicants can improve their chances of admission into a postsecondary program by taking biology, math, health, and computer science courses in high school.br>

    Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average. Job prospects should be very good; technicians with a strong understanding of technology and computer software will be in particularly high demand.
