Introduction
The general education program at Lanier Technical College helps students
achieve their academic, career, and life goals. General education
at Lanier Technical College helps students establish and expand their
world view and perspective on the community at large by obtaining
skills and knowledge in the following areas: communication, critical
thinking, problem solving, and social behavior and interaction. Students
should be able to:
|
|
- Communicate
Effectively. Read and listen with comprehension and
write clearly using Standard English. This outcome is assessed
in gateway English courses.
- Think
Critically. Apply logic, reasoning and judgment to interpret
problems, analyze and evaluate arguments, and present conclusions.
This outcome is assessed in gateway Economics, English,
and Psychology courses.
- Solve
Problems. Use quantitative techniques to organize, analyze,
and synthesize data to solve mathematical problems. This
outcome is assessed in gateway Mathematics courses.
- Understand
Social Behavior and Interactions. Demonstrate a basic
knowledge of the principles of human relations/behavior.
This outcome is assessed in gateway Interpersonal Relations
and Psychology courses.
|
These competencies
are integrated throughout the general education program. Course
syllabi outline objectives, minimum learning outcomes, assessment,
and evaluation methods.
Policy
The following courses are designated as general education gateway
courses:

| Communicate
Effectively: Read and/or listen with comprehension and write
clearly using Standard English |
Clearly
analyzes topics and applies logical thought processes in presenting
the central idea. Demonstrates excellent development with examples
illustrating synthesis of information read or heard.
Few, if any, mechanical errors. Conforms completely to format
requirements.
|
Identifies
the central idea with evidence of logical thought processes.
Demonstrates adequate development with relevant examples drawn
from information read or heard. Support is evident. Errors in
grammar and language do not distract from content. Conforms
to most format requirements |
Identifies
the central idea. Provides adequate examples. Support from information
read or heard is evident, but insubstantial. Some errors in
grammar and language. Generally conforms to format requirements |
Fails to
identify the central idea. Is often confusing and unclear. Provides
weak examples, if any. Relationship of evidence to arguments
lacking. Errors in grammar and language. Does not conform to
format requirements. Does not exhibit reading or listening comprehension |
| Think Critically:
Apply logic, reasoning and judgment to interpret problems, analyze
and evaluate arguments, and present conclusions |
Interpretations
critique content, examine inconsistencies, refute bias, and
answer insightful questions. Analyses synthesize data, evaluate
arguments, analyze distinctions, and examine conclusions. Presentations
synthesize information, discuss issues thoroughly, argue clearly
and thoroughly, and correctly format citations. |
Interpretations
categorize content, identify inconsistencies, detect bias, and
ask insightful questions. Analyses evaluate data, recognize
arguments, identify distinctions, and formulate conclusions.
Presentations incorporate information, identify issues, present
valid arguments, and correctly format most citations |
Interpretations
recognize basic content, state some inconsistencies, note some
bias, and identify some questions. Analyses paraphrase data,
see some arguments, identify some distinctions, and identify
some conclusions. Presentations overlook some information, generalize
issues, present arguments, and cite sources. |
Interpretations
miss major content areas, do not detect inconsistencies, ignore
bias, and do not question materials. Analyses repeat data, see
no arguments, overlook distinctions, and fail to draw conclusions.
Presentations omit research, misrepresent issues, omit argument,
and do not cite sources. |
| Think Critically:
Apply logic, reasoning and judgment to interpret problems, analyze
and evaluate arguments, and present conclusions
Solve
Problems: Use mathematics to organize, analyze, and synthesize
data to solve mathematical problems.
|
Correctly
solves mathematical problems requiring a high degree of organization,
analysis, or synthesis. |
Correctly
identifies most factors involved in solving a mathematical problem.
Correctly solves mathematical problems requiring some organization,
analysis, or synthesis. |
Is able
to identify some factors involved in solving a mathematical
problem. Correctly solves simplistic mathematical problems requiring
little organization, analysis, or synthesis. |
Shows little
or no awareness of factors involved in solving mathematical
problems. Appears to guess at solutions. |
| Understand
Social Behavior and Interactions: Demonstrate a basic knowledge
of the principles of human relations/behavior. |
Exemplifies
a thorough understanding of human social behavior and the ethical
dimensions of social interactions.
Evaluates rules and norms for effect and applies them to new
situations appropriately.
|
Demonstrates
a practical grasp of human social behavior in most situations.
Synthesizes rules and norms, and applies them correctly to most
situations. |
Identifies
important dimensions of human behavior and appropriate social
interactions in some situations. Analyses and applies rules
and norms correctly to common situations. |
Shows limited
awareness of suitable human social behavior and appropriate
social interactions. Adequately applies rules and norms to some
social settings. |
Students who achieve the Developing level (70%) will be deemed as
having demonstrated the competency being assessed. Faculty will
record each student's score on the gateway course General Education
assessments. The instructional supervisors will ensure these scores
are recorded for each gateway course.
