Academic
Advisement
Each student is assigned an academic advisor who will advise
him/her concerning courses needed to complete a program
of study. Students and advisors are responsible for monitoring
appropriate courses to ensure that required courses are
taken in the proper sequence. Each quarter, students should
be diligent about checking courses they register for against
their required programs of study to assure they remain on
target for graduation.
Acceptable
Computer Use Guidelines
Lanier Technical College has developed guidelines for use
of hardware, software, and internet. These guidelines are
posted in computer laboratories and in the Library. Students
are encouraged to read them thoroughly. Failure to follow
the guidelines may result in dismissal from Lanier Technical
College.
Adult
Literacy
Lanier Technical College’s Office of Adult Literacy
offers free-of-charge instruction in GED preparation, civics,
and English for non-native speakers. They also schedule
the GED test. Contact the Office of Adult Literacy for a
schedule of classes or GED test dates and locations.
Advisory
Committees
Each program has an advisory committee composed of at least
three members from business and industry. The committees
met at least twice annually to develop a plan of work; to
review curriculum, equipment, supplies, and facilities;
and to address issues and trends pertinent to the programs.
Articulated
Credit
Courses taken in a Tech Prep curriculum at the secondary
level in which the student receives a grade of C or better
are credited toward the student’s academic record
at Lanier Technical College. The credit is not calculated
into the quarterly grade point average. Contact the Tech
Prep coordinator for further details.
Attendance Policy
One of the goals of Lanier Technical College is to place
dependable, competent employees in the workplace. Students
are expected to attend class regularly and to be punctual.
Attendance requirements are determined at the departmental
level for each class. Attendance policies are contained
in the syllabus of each course. It is the responsibility
of the student to read and comply with the attendance policies.
Students who exceed the allowable absences for a course
will be administratively withdrawn from the course.
Change
of Program
Students may request to change their program of study by
completing the Change of Program form. The form must be
completed prior to the effective quarter. The student’s
acceptance into the new program is determined by an evaluation
of his or her admissions file and academic record. Students
should always discuss change of programs with the financial
aid advisor.
Classrooms
and Laboratories
Lanier Technical College students are training at the best
facility available. Equipment is leading edge that is used
in the real world. When they graduate or receive their certificates,
they will be ready for the workplace.
Cooperative
Agreements
In order to provide opportunities for students to continue
their educational goals, Lanier Technical College has established
several cooperative agreements with colleges in the area:
Gainesville College, DeVry Institute of Technology, Piedmont
College, North Georgia College and State University, and
University of Phoenix. Detailed information regarding these
opportunities is available from one of the colleges or the
Registrar’s Office.
Course
Withdrawal
Course withdrawals are initiated by the student through
completion of the Drop-Add Form. The form requires the signature
of the student and the adviser.
Course
Cancellation
Lanier Technical College reserves the right to cancel classes
due to low enrollment or other reasons. Decisions to cancel
classes are made by the Director of Instruction. A full
refund is made for any class canceled.
Credit
by Examination
An enrolled student who presents satisfactory evidence that
he or she has prior knowledge of a particular subject may
receive credit by passing an examination for the course.
Credits earned through course examination are awarded after
the student passes the exemption test. A grade of EX is
awarded and is not calculated into the quarterly grade point
average.
Developmental
Studies
Developmental studies courses are designed to help students
review reading, writing, and mathematical competencies that
they may not have used for a while or to learn competencies
that will allow them to be successful in upper-level course
work. Developmental studies course credits do not apply
toward the total credit hours required in a certificate,
diploma, or degree program.
Diploma
to Degree
If a student desires to transfer from diploma status to
degree status, he/she needs to consult with his/her program
advisor, meet the requirements for transfer, and complete
the Change of Program form. Students should always discuss
program changes with their financial aid advisor.
Electives
Some programs require a certain number of electives from
technical-related areas. Before registering for an elective,
any course prerequisite must be met. Each program has an
approved list of electives from which students may choose.
Grading
System
The following state-standardized grading scale is used to
indicate the level of performance in course work:
A
90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 0-59
Grade
Appeal
If a student receives a course grade which he or she believes
is incorrect, the first step is for the student to discuss
the disagreement with the instructor. If an agreement cannot
be reached, the student then addresses an appeal to the
appropriate Director of Instruction who will conduct an
investigation and notify the student of the results within
five school days. If the student is not satisfied with the
decision of the Director of Instruction, he or she may direct
a written appeal to the Vice President of Instruction or
Campus Operations who will convene an appeals committee
for resolution; a resolution will be rendered within five
working days. The decision of the committee is final.
Incomplete
Grade
Students who have extreme hardships or verifiable extenuating
circumstances may be assigned an “I” grade and
given additional time to complete course work. This is at
the discretion of the instructor. Students who need additional
time to complete course work must communicate with their
instructor prior to the end of the quarter. Students have
five weeks in the next quarter to complete the work. If
the incomplete work is not completed by the fifth week of
the following quarter, the grade converts to an F.
Library
Services
The Lanier Technical College Library provides materials
and services promoting the development of academic foundations,
employability skills, and technical fundamentals for all
training areas. The library houses a growing collection
related to academic and personal needs of faculty and students.
The collection also includes audiovisual materials, electronic
databases, and subscriptions to periodicals and newspapers.
Library
services available include reference service, bibliographic
instruction, and Internet access. Student computers are
available for word processing, GALILEO, or other internet
use during all hours the library is open. Interlibrary loan
from anywhere in the Southeast is also available. Library
staff members are available to provide information and reference
services including both formal and informal instruction
in the use of library resources. A photocopier is available
for student use.
Orientation
sessions are available each quarter during class visits
to the library. The orientation is designed to acquaint
students with library policies, procedures and services.
Student users must present a valid Lanier Technical College
ID in order to borrow books.
Make-Up
Work
Students are responsible for arranging make-up or work missed
with their instructors. Procedures for make up work are
at the discretion of the instructors.
Work
Ethics
Work ethics refer to those behavioral characteristics and
attitudes desired by employers. Ten appropriate employee
behaviors are integrated into the curriculum of each course:
attendance, character, teamwork, appearance, attitude, productivity,
organizational skills, communication, cooperation, and respect.
Faculty concentrate on one work ethics trait each of the
ten weeks of the quarter.
Work
Ethics Grade
Students receive a work ethic grade as well as an academic
grade for each course completed. Instructors evaluate each
student during the quarter using the Work Ethics Evaluation
Form. Work ethics grades do not affect quarterly or cumulative
grade point averages. The work ethic grade is recorded on
the student’s academic transcript. The following grades
are used:
3
Exceeds Expectations - Work ethics performance was exemplary
2 Meets Expectations - All work ethics standards
were met
1 Needs Improvement - Some work ethics standards
were not met
0 Unacceptable - Work ethics performance was below
average
