MISSION STATEMENT:      
The mission of the CLT program at Lanier Technical College is to provide the knowledge and develop the necessary skills and attitudes for becoming an integral member of the clinical laboratory health team.
GOALS:     
The goals of the CLT program are to provide a program of correlated theory and clinical experience to prepare individuals to contribute in meeting the needs of their communities as qualified clinical laboratory technicians and to prepare students for the certification exam.

OBJECTIVES:

1.      To prepare the student to function effectively as an integral member of 
          the clinical laboratory team.

2.      To prepare students to perform the following tasks:
a.      collect and process biological specimens for analysis
b.      perform analytical tests on biological specimens
c.      recognize factors that affect procedures and results
d.      monitor quality control within predetermined limits
e.      perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment or refer 
         to appropriate sources for repait
f.      demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills
         with patients, lab personnel, other health care professionals, and with the
         public
g.      recognize work relationships in the positions held
h.     apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures
i.      relate laboratory findings to common disease processes
j.      recognize and act upon individual needs for continuing education as a
        function of growth and maintenance of professional competence

3.      Upon graduation and initial appointment, the clinical laboratory technician should be able to demonstrate entry level competencies in the above tasks.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR THE CLINICAL LABORATORY PROGRAM

The following are a list of physical capabilities and behavioral skills that have been identified as being necessary for success in the field of laboratory medicine.

VISUAL OBSERVATION: 
1.      Differentiate color changes during the performance of laboratory procedures

2.       Observe a patient's condition during phlebotomy procedures
3.      Read laboratory instrument technical manuals, standard operating
         procedures, text and graphs displayed in print and on a video monitor, and
         other pertinent materials for patient care and professional practice 
4.      Employ a binocular microscope to identify structures within microscopic
         specimens
 
MOTOR FUNCTION: 
1.      Perform venipuncture at bedside or other designated locations
2.      Lift and handle laboratory instruments and equipment
3.      Manipulate clinical laboratory instruments and equipment (pipettes, test 
         tubes) in a manner consistent with standards of clinical laboratory practice
4.      Use an electronic keyboard to operate laboratory instruments
5.      Perform moderately taxing physical work for extended periods (prolonged 
         sitting or standing for several hours)
 
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: 
1.      Possess verbal and non-verbal skills adequate for transmitting information 
         to patients and other healthcare personnel
2.      Possess adequate hearing for satisfactory communication with 
         hospital, clinical personnel, and patients
3.      Follow verbal and written instructions to correctly and independently 
         perform laboratory test procedures
4.      Use computer software, the Internet, and email systems for communication 
         and education
5.      Prepare laboratory reports, and take paper, computer and laboratory 
         practical examinations
 
BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL SKILLS: 

1.      Behavior and social skills must be acceptable to both a school and clinical 
         setting
2.      Dress to project a neat, well-groomed, professional appearance
3.      Be flexible and creative and adapt to professional and technical change
4.      Adapt to working with potentially offensive specimens, chemicals,
         and biologicals
5.      Support and promote the activities of fellow students and of health care
         professionals
6.      Help foster a team approach to learning, problem solving, and patient care
7.      Be honest, compassionate, ethical, and responsible
8.      Possess these intellectual skills: comprehension, measurement, mathematical 
         calculation, reasoning, analysis, comparison, self-expression, and criticism
9.      Ability to solve problems and think critically
10.   Critically evaluate his/her own performance, accept constructive criticism,
        and look forward to improve upon performance
