Interior Design

Exciting!

This is the best word to describe Interior Design.

Interior Design touches our lives in every aspect of our daily routines:

  - In our homes
  - In our work environments
  - Where we shop
  - Inside our cars, airplanes and trains
  - In our medical facilities
  - In Daycare centers

This list includes only a few of the environments where a designer's choice of colors, textiles, materials and finishes impact our lives. Becoming a professional designer who is trained and qualified to make these decisions begins with a solid educational foundation in Interior Design.

Lanier Technical College offers an Interiors Program that provides extensive instruction with three levels of study for those who have a desire to learn more about this wonderful career.

Whether acquiring a Certificate, a Diploma or an Associates Degree, the student will receive a balance of technical, creative, and business training necessary for a successful career in the Interior Design industry.

The required courses will integrate theory and technology utilizing industry standards, so students can develop design skills and acquire the intellectual tools necessary to create beautiful and functional residential and commercial designs while contributing to community business development.

Students build on a foundation of design principles, color theory and drawing while learning about human factors, space planning, interior construction, building codes, as well as drafting and CAD.  They will also gain a historical perspective of furnishings and architecture for practical application to the field and become aware of professional responsibilities and ethics for business success.

The Interior Design Assistant Certificate is a course of study that can be completed by the full time student in approximately three quarters and encompasses the study of the fundamentals of design coupled with business law and selling.  The training required by this technical certificate will give the student skills that are necessary to become an assistant in a design studio, an architectural firm or a furniture store.

The Interiors Diploma expands on the foundation classes, exposing students to history of furnishings and trends, architecture, drawing and CAD as well as materials selection and specifications.  The Interior Diploma program could be completed in approximately five quarters and would prepare a student to work as an assistant or beginning designer in any of the many avenues within the design industry.

Students who complete the highest level of achievement for the Interiors Program will be awarded an Associates Degree in Interior Design. The courses required for the degree would require approximately six qarters for completion.  In addition to the foundation courses in interiors, degree students will also be required to take additional classes in Math, English, Psychology and approved electives.  Degree students have studio classes, business seminar courses and they are required to work a total of 240 hours in industry approved internships in preparation for their future employment.

While the course of study is challenging, students who are enrolled in the Interiors program develop a close friendship with each other, and these connections are reinforced through quarterly luncheons, class field trips and social events open to all full time and part time Interiors students.
