Medical Assisting
 
    As the baby-boomer population continues to reach retirement, the greater the need for health care professionals such as the Medical Assistant. Medical Assistants are multi-skilled health care professionals trained in administrative and clinical procedures for clinics, physicians’ offices, and group practices. Medical assistants work under the supervision of physicians in their offices or other medical care settings in accordance with respective state laws.
 
Administrative duties include:
  • Scheduling and receiving patients
  • Preparing and maintaining medical records
  • Performing basic secretarial skills and medical transcription
  • Handling telephone calls and writing correspondence
  • Serving as a liaison between the physician and other individuals
  • Managing practice finances
Clinical duties include:
  • Asepsis and infection control
  • Taking patient histories and vital signs
  • Performing first aid and CPR
  • Preparing patients for procedures
  • Assisting the physician with examinations and treatments
  • Collecting and processing specimens
  • Performing selected diagnostic tests
  • Preparing and administering medications as directed by the physician
Medical Assistants who complete the program may become Certified Medical Assistants through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) certification testing which is reviewed by the National Board of Medical Examiners. The Medical Assisting program at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth, Oakwood and Winder-Barrow campuses are CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited making students eligible to take the CMA exam. Students also have the choice to take the RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) for certification. The Forsyth campus offers the Medical Assisting Program in the evenings.

The Lanier Technical College Medical Assisting Program is offered at 3 of our 5 campus locations. Student externships are set up in area physician offices and clinics.  The campuses that offer this program are located in Forsyth, Hall, and Barrow counties.
 
With the increasing need for medical ambulatory offices, the demand for Medical Assistants is rapidly expanding. We invite you to join this rewarding area of patient care, here at Lanier Technical College.
 
The mission of the American Association of Medical Assistants is to enable medical assisting professionals to enhance and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and professionalism required by employers and patients; protect medical assistants' right to practice; and promote effective, efficient health care delivery through optimal use of multi-skilled Certified Medical Assistants® (CMAs).
 
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BEING A GOOD MA:
  • Provide the high quality of professional care and dedication to all patients.
  • By listening, showing courtesy and compassion allows an MA to really touch someone's life and show that you genuinely care for them.
  • Role of a responsible MA allows the physician to have a more efficient and professional office.
  • The role of a MA allows for the physician to spend more time with his patients knowing that the MA carrying out both the administrative/clinical responsibilities.
  • As an MA, one interacts with patients, their families, laboratories, hospitals, physicians, pharmaceutical reps, and equipment manufactures.
  • MA can offer one to specialize in medical transcribing, insurance billing, insurance coding, bookkeeping, which are all attributes which can lead one to become an Office Manager, if they desire the administration aspect of an MA.
  • MA can also choose the option to focus on the clinical aspect, and become specialized in which field they choose....ex: GYN, Endoscopy, Cardiology, etc.
  • MA role is diversified in both administrative and clinical and can allow an MA to apply their skills accordingly.
