Admissions
The admissions policy and procedures of the Georgia
Board of Technical and Adult Education and Lanier Tech
assure the citizens of Georgia equal access to the opportunity
to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary
to secure personally satisfying and socially productive
employment. By design and implementation, the policy
and procedures governing admission to Lanier Tech are
nondiscriminatory to any eligible applicant regardless
of age, race, color, national origin, religion, sex,
marital status, academic or economic disadvantage, or
disability.
Lanier Tech is committed to an "open door"
admissions policy. This policy means that any qualified
applicant able to benefit from our curriculum will be
served by the institution on a first-applied, first-qualified
basis. Some programs may use a competitive admission
process. Entrance requirements are flexible enough to
allow a student opportunity for admission into a specific
program. This can be accomplished when the student demonstrates
aptitude and ability for a program as determined by
satisfactory academic performance, placement tests,
and other appropriate evaluations, when deemed necessary,
to determine general fitness for admission.
Lanier Tech requires that a minimum of 50% of the course
work of a particular program of study be completed at
the institution granting the degree, diploma or certificate.
When a student attends two or more state technical colleges,
the degree, diploma or certificate will be awarded by
the College within which the larger number of hours
have been accumulated.

Georgia Student, Out of State Student, and Non-Citizen
Student. The student residency category governs the
tuition rate paid by the student.

Procedure: Residency
Exceptions to the in-state residency requirements of
this policy include:
- These exceptions may also qualify for the Hope
Program:
- Employees and their children who move to Georgia
for employment with a new or expanding industry
as defined in Georgia Code 20-4-40;
- Non-resident students who are financially dependent
upon a parent, parents, or spouse who has been a
legal resident of Georgia for at least twelve consecutive
months immediately preceding the date of registration;
provided, however, that such financial dependence
shall have existed for at least 12 consecutive months
immediately preceding the date of registration;
- Full-time employees of Georgia's Technical Colleges,
their spouses, and their dependent children;
- Full-time teachers in the public schools of Georgia
or in the University System and their dependent
children. Teachers employed full-time on military
bases in Georgia qualify for this waiver;
- Military personnel and their dependents stationed
in Georgia and on active duty;
- Military personnel and their dependents who are
legal residents of Georgia, but are stationed outside
the State.
- These exceptions do not qualify for the Hope Program:
- Students who are legal residents of out-of-state
counties bordering on Georgia counties in the
service area in which an institute of the Department
is located and who are enrolled in said institute.
- International students, selected by the college
president or authorized representative, provided
however, that the number of the international
students exempted does not exceed one percent
of the total enrollment of full-time students;
- Career consular officers and their dependents
who are citizens of the foreign nation which their
consular office represents, and who are stationed
living in Georgia under order of their respective
governments. This waiver shall apply only to those
consular officers whose nations operate on the
principle of educational reciprocity with the
United States.
- When applying for admission to
Georgia‘s Technical Colleges, an individual
must indicate whether or not the individual is a legal
resident of the State of Georgia, and for what period
of time.
- When a question arises concerning legal residence,
proof of intent to remain in Georgia indefinitely
must reviewed with each case being considered unique
and evaluated accordingly
- Proof on intent to remain in Georgia indefinitely
can be documented by review of factors such as drivers
license, voter registration card and automobile registration
- A student must petition the Technical College such
a student is attending for a change in residency status.
Change in residency status for fee purposes is not
automatic.
Applicants must complete and return all required forms
and credentials to the college prior to open registration.
Students are encouraged to apply or update their applications
well in advance of open registration. Late applications
may be considered only if time permits. Delays in acceptance
will occur if application materials are received in several
segments and/or if the applicant must be reminded to submit
certain documents.
Students applying for admission to Lanier Tech must
be 16 years of age or older. Applicants must be 17 years
of age or older for admission into the Cosmetology and
all Health programs.
Articulate Credit
Certain Technical Education courses taken at the secondary
level may be exempted through Lanier Technical College's
articulation agreements with our service area high schools.
If a student has graduated from high school within the
last 24 months and passed any of the courses listed
on the "Request
for articulation form", the student is eligible
to take the validation exam for the course at no cost.
The student MUST pass the validation exam with 80% in
order to exempt the Lanier Tech course. Look over the
"How
to claim articulated credit form" for the process
and contact Shannon Obermeier (sobermeier@laniertech.edu
or 770-532-5590) for further information.
A regular high school diploma or a General Educational
Development Diploma (GED) is required as a prerequisite
for entrance into some diploma and certificate programs
and for all degree programs. See specific entrance requirements
for individual programs. A regular high school diploma
or GED is required for all associate degree programs
prior to admission.
A high school diploma or a GED is not required as a
prerequisite for entrance in all diploma programs; however,
prior to graduation from a diploma program at Lanier
Tech, all students must receive either a high school
diploma or a GED. An applicant who does not have a high
school diploma or GED, and who wishes to apply for financial
aid, may demonstrate eligibility for entry to those
programs not requiring a high school diploma/GED if
the applicant achieves acceptable scores on the Ability-to-Benefit
(ATB) ASSET Examination as well as acceptable program
entry scores. Passing the ATB exam does not take the
place of having a high school diploma or GED for those
programs that require a diploma or GED as a prerequisite
for admission purposes.
The federal Department of Education guidelines specify
that the minimum passing scores for HEA Title IV grant,
loan, or work assistance eligibility for ATB students
is a scale score on the ASSET admissions exam. If these
scores are not met and the student does not have a diploma
or GED, he/she is not eligible for the federal Pell
grant or Federal Work Study.
Applicants must be physically able to attend school.
In some programs, a student who has a physical condition
that would limit participation in a class/lab should
provide a written statement from a doctor indicating
the student's ability to perform all class/lab requirements.

with entering students or with transfer students.
The
following documentation must be presented for consideration
of advanced standing.

- An
official transcript must demonstrate that any
courses to be exempted or transferred have already
been passed with a minimum grade of "C"
at a Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA)
approved Institution or University. The coursework
must have been completed within the past 3 years.
- A
copy of the syllabus for the course(s) to be
exempted or transferred must be submitted to
ensure the Technical College System of Georgia
(TCSG) standards have been met.
|
The
following guidelines are used to determine if entering
students can exempt classes.

- Clinic
and the didactic classes tied in with each clinic
are not available for exemption. These courses
which can not be exempted include:

can transfer credit.

- Transfer
students will be admitted only when space is
available.
- Transfer
students must be in academic good standing from
their previous institution with no course grades
below 70.
- Transfer
students from within the TCSG should be able
to continue their coursework at Lanier Technical
College from the point they had completed at
the previous institution. This is due to the
similarity of the courses based on the TCSG
Standards. If the coursework is not of a linear
nature, then special consideration will be given
to determine if it is feasible for the student
to transfer into the program.
- Transfer
students from outside the TCSG will be considered
on a case by case basis to determine if it is
feasible for the student to transfer into the
program.
