Surgical Technology Degree
The Surgical Technology program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in the surgical field. The Surgical Technology, Degree program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and technical knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in Surgical Technology. Graduates of the program receive a Surgical Technology degree and are qualified for employment as surgical technologists. Graduates of the program receive a Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science degree, and are eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination to become a Certified Surgical Technologist. The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP.) This program is offered by the Surgical Technology (SUR) department.

Availibility
Students are accepted twice a year based on course and space availability for the full-time day program at Oakwood Campus. Twenty-four students are accepted each year for the program. This program offers day classes at the Oakwood Campus.
Requirements
  • Applicant must be at least 17 years of age.

  • High school diploma or GED is required prior to admission.
    Official transcripts or GED scores must be submitted from all colleges and/or high schools attended for credit.

  • Take the ASSET placement test or submit SAT, ACT, CPE or COMPASS test scores.
    All tests must have been taken within five (5) years of application for admission.


  • Additional Requirements
     Surgical Technology program admission is a competitive selection process. Students must achieve a cumulative average of 2.5 in ENG 1101, ENG 1102 or HUM 1101, ENG 1105 or SPC 1101, MAT 1111 OR MAT 1101, PSY 1101, SOC 1101, and SCT 100 at Lanier Tech or have a GPA of 2.5 on all previous college courses. Students must complete AHS 104, AHS 109, BIO 2113, BIO 2114, BIO 2117, and SCT 100 prior to enrolling in SUR courses. Students must take the NLN test and receive a composite percentile score of at least 75 to be considered for selection. An interview, an essay, and student's GPA will also be considered as part of the selection process. Students wishing to transfer credit from other colleges must have all transfer of credit finalized with the Office of the Registrar at least one full quarter prior to selection into the program. All AHS courses must be completed within two years of acceptance into the program. STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR SELECTION AND SUBMIT IT TO THE OFFICE OF ADMISSIONS BY MARCH 15 TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE SUMMER QUARTER OR BY SEPTEMBER 15 TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE WINTER QUARTER. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION UNLESS THIS FORM IS SUBMITTED PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE. A minimum of 125 clinical surgical cases are required for successful completion of the program.

    COMMISSION OF A FELONY MAY PREVENT YOU FROM OBTAINING A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST LICENSE.
     
    Please read the following:

    All applicants for licensure as a SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST shall consent to a criminal background check. OCGA 43-1-19. The board shall have the authority to refuse to grant, to revoke, or to discipline the license of any Surgical Technologist if such Surgical Technologist has any of the following:
    1) a felony conviction;
    2) a conviction for any crime involving moral turpitude,
    3) an arrest, charge, or sentence for any felony or crime involving moral turpitude where:
         a) a plea of nolo contendere was entered,
         b) first offender treatment granted, or
         c) the adjudication was otherwise withheld.
    A felony includes any offense which, if committed in the state of Georgia would be deemed a felony. A convicion includes either a verdict of guilty or a plea of guilty. OCGA 43-1-19.
