Lanier Technical College holds 51st Commencement
honoring the Class of 2017.




The Class of 2017 had 1,284 students eligible to participate in the ceremony with 25% earning the Associate of Applied Science degrees. The Class of 2017 represents the largest number of associate degrees every produced by Lanier Tech in one year. Equally as important, 38% of the graduates earned a college diploma, and 37% earned a technical certificate of credit. Many graduates earned more than one credential.

The Class of 2017, with an average GPA of 3.46, was made-up of 57% women and 43% men. The oldest graduate is 76 years old, showing that it's never too late to follow your dreams and earn a college credential. The youngest graduate is 18 years old.



During his remarks, Dr. Ray Perren, President of Lanier Technical College, noted that one of the best statistics about the Class of 2017 is that nearly 100% are already employed or are planning to continue their education, taking their place in every part of our workforce.



Lauren Hockaday, Fire Science student and Lanier Tech's GOAL Student of the Year, inspired the Class of 2017 when she remarked that she's spending her summer putting her education into practice by starting her career as a Firefighter, but will be back in the Fall to complete her degree.

"This Class of 2017 represents the new reality for American education and business, Over the next ten years eighty percent of the job openings in this nation will require training beyond high school but will not requires a four-year college degree. You are the face of the American workforce. You are the people who will assure that America remains the greatest economy on the face of the earth."



Bridget Rigby, Lead Instructor of the Paramedicine Program, and a practicing paramedic for many years, lead the processional. Rigby, Lanier Technical College's Rick Perkins Instructor of Year, also delivered the keynote speech.



Smiles of the Class of 2017 was accompanied by loud applause from the audience of family and friends as Dr. Perren officially conferred the college credentials and said, "Please move your tassels to the left", a time-honored gesture indicating "graduate with earned credential".
