Annual continuing education requirements for Peace Officers in Georgia include mandatory completion of Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance and additional training in Community Relations. This training is a reflection of new challenges police officers face on a daily basis.

The instructional goal for Use of Force and De-escalation Options for Gaining Compliance is to provide officers with a review of use of force concepts and to introduce de-escalation techniques as a tool for reducing the need to use force. Special emphasis is placed on officer safety from both a physical and legal perspective.

A Barrow County Sheriff's Department
Instructor provided the specialized training to the Lanier Tech's Police Department. The five-hour training session was opened to other agencies, and Officers from Athens Technical College P.D., Braselton P.D., and several retired Athens Police Officers attended. Hosting this type of training is first for Lanier Tech, but LTC P.D. Chief Jeff Strickland noted that the P.D. will host similar training in the future.

Chief Strickland remarked, “The success of a Police Department is based on its people; well-trained police officers are better prepared to serve their community”.

Lanier Technical College Police Department was established in 2016 to provide a higher level of police and security services to the students, faculty, staff, and visitors on the five campuses of the College.
