All state policies and procedures will be followed regarding assessment of Adult Education students. Level completions will be assessed according to state guidelines.

Every student who enters Lanier Technical College will go through a formal orientation process which lasts no fewer than 6 hours. No student may register for the GED Test without going through this process.

All GED pre-assessment will utilize the TABE. TABE 9 and 10 and TABE Class-E only may be utilized for this purpose. Teachers are encouraged to get assessment scores to students as quickly as possible.

All ESL pre-assessment will utilize the Best Literacy. Students who enter at level 5 will be administered the TABE Form E in reading.

Teachers in all GED and ELP classes are required to post-test students as outlined in the state assessment policy.

Suggested Post-Test Instruments for GED

  1. Full TABE, 9 or 10. This post test may not be the same form as the pre- test if the same version is being utilized.
  2. Survey forms are also highly recommended because of their brevity. Survey TABE 9 and 10 are available for this purpose.

Suggested Post-Test Instruments for ESL

All ESL students must be administered some form of the BEST Literacy except for level 6. Level 6 students must post-test on the TABE. These students should also have been pre-tested on the TABE during the same academic year.

Please note that teachers are responsible for placing pre- and post-test book and answer sheet orders to have materials on hand when they are needed for post-testing. Thinking ahead is a best practice.

All testing materials must be inventoried and tracked. These inventories are due at the end of the academic year.

Level Completions for GED Level 6

The following is the way that we will be required to handle GED level completions for level 6. This policy is in compliance with federal guidelines.

Only students who take the GED Test at level 6 will be able to have the GED Test count as a post test and a level 6 completion.

Many students enter our GED Program at either levels 4 or 5 and are able to pass the GED Test almost immediately. Students do not receive a level 6 completion if they take the GED Test and pass it in any level besides level 6.

In order to count the GED Test as a level 6 completion, the student would have to take a TABE to post-test and progress out of one level and into the next level. If a student entering at level 4 is able to post-test out of each level up to level 6, then the student may use the GED Test to count as the level completion post-test for level 6.
