Lanier Technical College offering Summer Career Camp

Lanier Technical College is excited to be offering a Summer Career Camp for late elementary, middle school and high school students at our Oakwood, Dawson and Forsyth campuses! The camp is being offered from June 26th to June 30th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Session 1) and afternoon from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Session 2). Classes being offered include technology areas such as:
• Web Design - Create and design your own personal web page! Learn basic components of web page design including text, images, and links using DreamWeaver or Microsoft FrontPage. (Grades 7 – 12)
• Computer Creation - Build a computer from scratch. What is RAM, ROM, CPU, DIMM, CD R/W? You’ll become more confident with what to look for when you buy a computer and when troubleshooting problems. (Grades 5 – 12) (We will pair similar ages for building)
• Robotics - Build robots that you control using Lego components. Learn to program them to do activities and play games. They do what you tell them! (Grades 5 – 8)
• Basic Programming with Alice - Programming is a skill that seems difficult and time consuming. We will learn a language called Alice that will teach the fundamentals of programming so you are ready to take on more complicated languages. Using Alice, a student can quickly create an animated movie in which characters move about and interact in an imagined 3D world. Along the way, the student learns how to write a simple computer program. The beauty of Alice is that it shows students how exciting and creative computer science can be. It’s not just for geeks, it’s imaginative fun for all! (Grades 5 -12)
• Video Game Design - Have you ever wanted to be able to design computer games? Then this class is for you! Game Maker is a program that allows you to make exciting computer games without the need to write a single line of code. Students will learn to make games and have a lot of fun. Using easy to learn drag-and-drop actions, you can create professional looking games within very little time. Game Maker is a shareware so you can continue playing at home after camp. (Grades 5 – 9) Sponsored by ITT Technical Institute, Duluth.
• Graphic Design - This class will teach the industry leading software used in today’s graphic design world as well as creative thinking skills. (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop) Students will be able to choose from a variety of projects that suit their personal interests in this diverse profession. (Grades 8-12)
• Automotive Technology - Come and learn about automotive shop equipment and automobile systems in general. You will look at different types of vehicles and learn to identify the different systems (electrical, fuel, brakes, etc.) You will hook up diagnostic equipment, identify problems and maybe blow off an air bag or two! (Grades 8 – 12)
• Drafting with AutoCAD - Drafting is used by civil engineers, land developers, architects, mechanical engineers, interior designers and other design professionals. AutoCAD is a computer software program that creates designs for ball parks, buildings, products, equipment, rooms and more. In our class you will learn the basics of how to draw 3D models and design in AutoCAD. (Grades 8 – 12)
• Electronics - Ever wonder how things run? Learn basic electronics fundamentals that include circuitry concepts, soldering and building an electrical robot. There will be a brief discussion about electronics careers, showing how to read a basic electronic schematic, and student construction and soldering of the simple circuit which the schematic represents. (Grades 7 – 12)

• Cosmetology - Come learn about how to take care of yourself with facials/skincare, makeup basics, hair styling techniques (hair extensions), your best colors and nail care. These are just some of the basics you need to know if you are interested in cosmetology for a career. Have fun learning while you are pampering yourself! (Session 1: Grades 5-7, Session 2: Grades 8-12)
• Decorating Design - Spend a week designing a bedroom makeover! You will learn the fundamentals of interior decorating - color, basic design, space planning, drawing techniques, interior finishes, manual drafting, textiles, & lighting. (Ages 10-18)
• Apprentice Challenge - Do you have what it takes to be the next Donald Trump? Are you organized, a team player, or even a project leader? Do you have the skills to promote, sell, and present your ideas? Well, put your skills to the test with the Kid’s Camp Apprentice Challenge! Teams will be formed and challenges will be given to test your marketing skills. Everyday a challenge will be given and at the end of the day, there will be a winning team based on the challenge and presentation. Whatever team has the most points by the end of the week will be HIRED!! (Grades 8 – 12)
• Babysitting Basics - This is a fun and exciting babysitting course designed for the student who is planning on babysitting in the future or is already a babysitter. Topics covered include: accident prevention, CPR and First Aid; fire safety, baby & child care and child protection. At the end of this class, each student will have a reference notebook to consult and a goody bag full of fun ideas for babysitting. (Ages 10 – 14)

Certified teachers and business professionals will be serving as session instructors. Classes are $100 per session. This is an opportunity to invite the next generation to explore different academic areas while having fun in a camp environment.
