Dual Enrollment New Student Orientation FERPA

What you need to know about the Family and Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA):

  • Protects the privacy of educational records
  • Establishes the right of students to inspect and review their educational records
  • Enables the student to amend those records
  • Allows student to give consent to disclosure of their records
  • FERPA does not allow parental access to student’s educational records without student’s written permission. This includes all dual enrollment students.

Release of Records and Information Consent

A Dual Enrollment student may visit the Student Affairs office to request the Release of Records and Information Consent form to authorize Lanier Technical College Representatives to discuss the student’s information with a parent, guardian, or other designee. The form must be completed in the presence of college personnel.

Directory Information

FERPA permits institutions to identify certain items of information as “directory information”. This information may be released upon request unless the student, during the first ten days of the term, has indicated, in writing to the Registrar’s Office, that they do not wish directory information to be released.

Directory information at Lanier Tech includes: Name, program of study, dates of enrollment, degrees, diplomas, certificates, awards received, participation in official sports and activities, and height and weight of athletic team members.
